Akitas: Champ & Miki

I would rather see the portrait of a dog that I know, than all the allegorical paintings they can show me in the world."

I've wanted to photograph Akitas ever since I saw the movie Hachi: A Dog's Tale. If you haven't seen the movie, do yourself a favor and rent it. The story of the bond between a college professor and the Akita puppy he rescues is refreshingly slow-paced and beautifully filmed. Warning: You will need tissues.

A happier story is how Champ and Miki were both adopted from the Akita Rescue into an incredible family. Miki, age 2,  is the playful newcomer. She's already an inseparable part of the pack and enjoys getting Champ to wrestle with her. Champ, age 10, is an easy-going and friendly dog. Who could resist his adorable teddy bear face? One of my favorite photos from the session is Champ gazing into his person's eyes. It's obvious he is a loyal and loving dog!
